Is that a handheld planer? And what is he doing with it? Looks like, planing down the backstip. I've read that those planers produce lots of tearout. I've got one, but haven't used it yet. Tried it on a cheapy spruce top once, and it didn't seem too bad, but is hard to control at the edges of the board. Maybe I need to practice with it. CrowDuck |

Is he planing down the back strip, or putting a radius on the back strip with shaped cutters? |

I think they modify this beast to curve the backstrip. You have to sharpen a moulding edge into the normal cutter. Kind of making molding in place. I think that's what Rod is up to here, but I don't see any sawdust. Maybe he's putting us on? |

No, this is not mine Bruce, just crusing around the net and saw this on Borge's site. I don't known if the blade is shaped or not but I would assume so. I don't have one of these planes and don't plan on getting one, for me there is no use for it. But if you already have one, this is not a bad idea. I remember seeing Charlie Hoffman's site where he uses a curved blade in his planner to cut the radius on his fretboards before he slots them. Lots of interesting ways of doing things in this our obsession. Anyone have any other "unique" ways of doing things? |

Rod, He would be running the blade across the grain. I find a sharp block plan quite enjoyable, no where ae noisy and probably as fast it is takes me to get out my BLUE power plane, plug it in and then chase all over the shop to claen up the chips that get deposited everywhere! Otherwise, great idea! Shane |

I'm not sure where this originated (Julius or elsewhere), but it's a nice system. The blades were specially ground to create a rounded profile on the back joint reinforcement. There are two aluminum runners screwed to the bottom of the planer to keep the strip centered. There is essentially no tearout - just a little sanding to clean things up. For small scale production, it's awesome. Very fast. The big downdraft table takes care of nearly all the chips. You pull out the planer and shape a pile of back strips in a few minutes. How do I know all this? That's my hand in the photo. The tool was running when the photo was taken, and you don't see any mess, do you? Steve |
